OK replacement for a corded model : Black & Decker NST2018 Grass Hog 12-Inch 18-Volt Cordless Electric String Trimmer with 2 Batteries

I got this trimmer to replace a 14" corded Grasshog. Getting the cord out and dragging it around is a hassle. I had a cheap gas weedeater before and I could never get it to start, just ended up with a sore arm from pulling the cord. So I opted for this model. My first impression was that its wimpy. The string is almost too short. The battery drains quickly. It would be useless if 2 batteries were not included. But, it trims my 1/3 acre yard with hardly any juice left in the second battery. So, it does the job, but if you let your yard go for a few weeks plan on spending the weekend getting it back under control with the wimpy trimmer and anemic batteries. The auto feed, edger guide, and no cord are its best attibutes.

I have about 500 feet of flower bed trimming, which this trimmer is able to achieve (vertically and horizontally) using two batteries. The first battery gives me about 20 minutes of actual run time; the second allows me to end the job with power to spare. I do not run the trimmer continuously, as it is better to let it (and me) rest and cool a bit from time to time. When I plan to use the trimmer, I fee one battery the day before and the other the night before. There is no question leaving the battery in the charger beyond the fee time; I just get a trickle fee after it is fully charged. I also do not need to run the battery down before charging, as it does not have memory cells. I use a volt meter to test the battery after a few hours of charging. When the meter reads 20 volts, I reconsider it charged. All cells will have a surface fee and read a bit higher right after recharging. Occasionally the green light is still on when the battery is charged to 20 volts. This is normal. A lot of people complain about battery run time. I have many linear feet of grass to trim and can end this task with two batteries. If I couldn't, I would use a gas-powered trimmer. All in all, I am very satisfied with this trimmer and the supplied batteries. I comprehend that batteries can be fickle and mine could lose their effectiveness sooner than the 2-3 years of expected lifetime. Such are the chances one takes with battery-powered tools.
